E XC LU S I VE INTERVIEW WIT H
MARLA AARON
What first sparked your passion for jewellery
design, and do you remember the moment
you knew this was your calling?
I always wanted to make things. Even when I
worked in marketing and advertising, I was
making jewellery, studying jewellery, obsessing
about jewellery. There’s something very
beautiful about utility. I’m obsessed with
hardware stores wherever I go. At some point
I realized it connected to jewellery — that I
could make something really special using the
foundation of these very functional objects.
Your jewellery designs are known for their
locks and carabiners. What inspired you to
develop this unique look?
Since I started the company, it has always been
about what the jewellery can do. It’s been very
focused on “here’s how you can use our jewellery
to do more with your jewellery.” Claspless
chains and one of our Locks in precious metals
seemed like the best way to do this. Once I
realized that we could morph the shape of the
Lock itself, it opened an entire world to me
and gave me a never-ending fountain of ideas.
The more I know the more I want to do.
Many jewellers have muses or sources of
inspiration—whether it's nature, history, or
personal experiences. What influences your
work the most?
I am equally influenced by antique jewellery from
every era, industrial landscapes, the way stuff
works, color – anything could influence the work
and it is unlikely to be other jewellery. The best
example of this is the development of our
earrings which exist because I was trying to
make an earring that was light weight and
convertible. I was on a zipline one day with my
children and in seeing the way that we “clicked
in” to different sections of the line literally gave
me the idea for how our earring mechanism
could work. Our convertible earrings are a literal
translation of this into fine jewellery. Many of our
pieces carry the same story - A transformation
of some form of functionality into something
playful and wearable.
adopting ethical sourcing and development
practices and to approaching running our
business with respect to the environment, and
to the communities impacted by our industry.
With our packaging we recently began using
wool felt pouches that is post fashion industry
waste. These pouches are as beautiful as they
are sustainable—it is unlikely anyone would
throw them away. Because for us it’s not about
creating things that may become waste but
how can we make things that will always be
treasured? That is the conversation for any
company like ours. We are always trying to
find new ways to approach our sourcing with
transparency through the entire supply chain.
Technology is always at play for us—working
with AI is our latest frontier—this is all a “work
in progress” because we really believe that we
are constantly learning what it means to be a
conscious, responsible business, so as we learn
more, we do more.
The jewellery world has evolved significantly
with technology, sustainability, and changing
consumer preferences. How do you see your
brand adapting to these shifts?
While we love jewellery, we love the human race
even more, which is why we are committed to
Can you share a piece you’ve created which
is particularly meaningful to you?
With our hand-engraved pieces people are
letting us tell their stories—silly, serious,
sentimental—and that is about as meaningful
as you can get if you ask me, which you did.
